Off-the-shelf mufflers don't always fit your vision or your needs. They may be incompatible with other modifications you've already completed, or you may need an outlet in a specific spot to get around other components or force exhaust in a specific direction. A muffler patch allows you to place outlets where you need them.
At Truck Pipes USA, we offer high-quality muffler patches in various inner and outer diameter sizes for big rigs and other applications.
Muffler patches help you create the sound and look you want for your truck by giving you multiple options for outlet placement. You can create a single-in and single-out or a dual-in and single-out. You can even go for a 90-degree configuration with an end-in and side-out, or whatever other configuration you want.
It's easiest to pair patches with custom mufflers that are either blank slates or that have the inlet size and placement you know you'll need. You then choose where you want to add your outlet patch.
It's possible to use a muffler patch to change the outlet placement on a muffler you already own. However, closing off an existing outlet and adding a new one creates two areas where you have to worry about weld quality and leaks.
The inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) of muffler patches tell you the size and fit. Something rigid, like a pipe, slides into an ID patch. Select an OD patch when you are attaching something that will slide over the outlet.
For example, if you are attaching a flex hose, choose an OD patch. Manufacturers design flex hoses to fit over, not inside, a rigid attachment like a muffler outlet. A patch makes for smooth, secure fits that won't leak exhaust or gather soot.
You can generally use a muffler patch on a pre-2007 truck as long as the result is sealed properly and mounted securely. However, you must still follow noise laws.
Starting in 2007, the muffler became part of a complex aftertreatment system, which complicates things. Attempting to customize newer systems may risk damaging emissions coatings or interfering with the operations of the diesel particulate filter or selective catalytic reduction. You face stiff fines and an out-of-service order if your emissions system fails inspection due to customization.
Agricultural and construction equipment, dump trucks, and diesel generators sometimes require an outlet that forces heat and exhaust in a specific direction. If you have a question about whether a muffler patch is a workable way to get the job done, our friendly and knowledgeable US-based staff is here to help.
Measure and inspect your other components before you start patching. We carry a wide selection of the parts you need to get it right the first time, including:
Muffler patches give you the freedom to create custom configurations that suit your aesthetics or practical needs. The patches and other exhaust components we sell at Truck Pipes USA adhere to IATF 16949:2016 standards, so you know you're starting with quality materials.
