Finding the Right Fit

You can't pick any muffler hanger at random. You must have a snug fit and the proper load capacity, or you risk vibrations and damage to your muffler or other components. 

You also may fall out of regulatory compliance if you choose the wrong hanger. A DOT inspector who finds that your muffler doesn't have the proper drop to clear road debris, or that it is loose or damaged, may order you out of service.

Shop by Shape and Size

Match your muffler hanger with the physical shape of your muffler. Trucks with vertical stacks or older horizontal exhaust setups typically need round hangers. Oval hangers are more common for mufflers with a flattened shape necessary for ground clearance.

Do not attempt to flatten a round hanger to make it oval. Pinching a hanger usually leaves space where it doesn't hug the muffler. This provides openings that can collect corrosives such as road salt.

Horizontal and Vertical Applications

Manufacturers engineer muffler hangers based on the job they have to do. Horizontal hangers are responsible for counteracting the force of suspending heavy exhaust components. They absorb the harsh conditions of the road and prevent the muffler from rubbing against the chassis. 

Vertical hangers typically found on exhaust stacks secure your muffler while standing up to wind resistance and providing leverage against sway. A horizontal hanger used for this job likely couldn't stand up to the lateral torque.
