What Does a Heat Shield Do?

Heat shields protect both you and your truck from dangerous temperatures. They prevent damage to hoses and lines, protect components and lights from warping, and keep high temperatures out of the cab. They do this by employing several basic cooling concepts.

Your exhaust stack emits massive amounts of heat and infrared energy. Under normal conditions, exhaust temperatures can reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit or 426 degrees Celsius, hot enough to melt lead. If your truck is going uphill or driving in city areas, the exhaust can get even hotter.

Your heat shield wraps around the stack, leaving a small amount of space. The air gap in between the stack and the shield serves to dissipate heat, while perforation on the shield's exterior mixes the hot air with cooler air from outside. 

Perforation, along with texturing on the shield, allows a controlled amount of hot air to escape. The reflective exterior serves to reflect heat and energy back into the atmosphere.

While an exhaust heat shield is a vital truck component, it also adds some stylish flair. Many drivers also add grab bars to their heat shields to offer another safety touchpoint for rig inspections.
