RV Exhaust

RV and semi-truck exhaust systems share many similarities. They both have to handle large amounts of exhaust gases for big engines designed to haul heavy vehicles over all kinds of terrain. But while truck exhaust systems are routed up above and behind the cab to keep heavy soot away from passenger cars, RV exhaust systems have to keep toxic gases away from not only the driver but anyone in the living area of the RV.

Exhaust systems for RVs are also smaller, because they don’t have to work quite as hard as big-rig systems. This translates to narrower pipes and more compact routing tucked out of sight in the undercarriage of the vehicle.

While truck cabs are thicker and more insulated against engine noise, RVs have thinner walls. Because travelers riding in an RV don’t want their conversation and relaxation drowned out by loud engines, the exhaust is also typically tuned to be quieter than in semi-trucks.

Choosing the Right Pipes for Your RV

If your RV exhaust seems louder than usual, your engine is losing efficiency, or your fuel economy is suffering, you may have damage to your exhaust system. Fortunately, you may not need a total overhaul. Often, you can simply replace the section of damaged pipe or other component.

Most damaged piping can be repaired by removing the affected section of pipe and replacing it with a standard pipe section. To choose the right pipe, you need to know the length, diameter, and shape of the damaged segment.

First, measure the total length of the section being replaced. Then, measure the outer diameter (OD) of the damaged pipe and the inner diameter (ID) of the end of its connecting sections on both ends. Matching these dimensions ensures a tight seal when you install the new pipe.

Pay attention to what connectors you need to install the new pipes. If any clamps or seals are damaged, you’ll need to replace them to properly connect the new section.

When it comes to the shape of the replacement pipe, there are a variety of options to get the right fit. Many standard pipes come in elbow, straight, or S-curved shapes to fit around other components in the undercarriage of your vehicle. Flex pipes are also a useful, affordable option that allow you to bend the pipe as needed to fill in the right gaps.

If you can't find a standard pipe in the right configuration, you can also order custom pipes to get the right fit.
